The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) has announced its disbanding and will end the nearly 40-year conflict with the Turkish state. In the announcement, the militia group said it would lay down its arms. This came months after the imprisoned leader said the group’s struggle had outlived its purpose.

Mustafa Akyol, a senior fellow at Cato’s Center for Global Liberty and Prosperity, commented on the announcement, saying on social media, “This is a blessing for Turks, Kurds, Turkey, Syria, and the whole region. It also offers a broader lesson for all: The safest way to end terrorism is through political solutions, not endless wars.”

Akyol has also written on the conflict previously.
