Nonpublic Immigration and Customs Enforcement data leaked to the Cato Institute reveal that nearly three in four people booked into ICE custody this fiscal year had no criminal conviction—contradicting the Trump administration’s claims about deporting “millions and millions of criminal aliens.”

Cato’s David Bier, Director of Immigration Studies and The Selz Foundation Chair in Immigration Policy, obtained the data showing that nearly half of detainees had neither criminal convictions nor pending charges. Only 5 percent had violent criminal convictions.
