Classical liberal thought in Argentina goes back to the 19th century. It inspired the constitution of 1853 under which Argentina became one of the richest countries in the world until the early 20th century. Alberto Benegas Lynch, Jr.—whom newly elected President Javier Milei frequently refers to as a mentor and a national hero because of his scholarship and lifelong advocacy of libertarian principles—will discuss the past and current relevance of classical liberalism in Argentina. He will also evaluate the prospects of a paradigm shift from thoroughgoing statism to the implementation of a broad liberal agenda as promised by the new government.
Why have libertarian policy and institutional proposals become politically popular, and how strong is that sentiment? Why did Argentina depart from its classical liberal tradition last century, and what are the key changes necessary for that resurgent tradition to now endure? Join us to hear Benegas Lynch, Jr. address these and other questions as his country debates fundamental reform.
