CENTCOM’s withdrawal from Al-Tanf marks a turning point in America’s Syria policy, but questions remain about the troops still stationed elsewhere in the country.

Cato Institute Research Fellow Jon Hoffman argues in a new blog that the Al-Tanf decision is overdue. U.S. troops there served no strategic purpose after ISIS’s territorial collapse in 2019 and have faced deadly attacks. With no legal authorization or clear mission, the remaining U.S. presence represents both strategic malpractice and unnecessary risk to servicemembers.
