The White House is continuing its push to end the Department of Education. Neal McCluskey, the Director of Cato’s Center for Educational Freedom, issued the following statement on recent action taken by the Trump Administration to further dismantle the Department.

The US Department of Education should not exist: The Constitution gives the federal government no authority to govern in education and the department has no track record of practical success. Indeed, it is an obstacle to success, putting bureaucrats above students and educators.

The recent announcement that six offices within the department will be moved to other federal offices and agencies is a positive step towards winding down the Department of Education. It is good that the administration is working to dismantle this unjustifiable department, and the use of interagency agreements to move these offices appears to be a legally sound way to do it. But more will ultimately need to be done. To right-size the federal role in education, almost all federal education programs must ultimately be completely eliminated.
