Newly released violent crime statistics show a decline in homicides, rapes, robberies, and aggravated assaults compared to last year. This is welcome news — though the reasons for it are less clear than some sources suggest. The White House is crediting “The Trump Effect.”
However, crime rates have been falling since 2022, when President Biden was in office, after a historic rise during the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, the homicide and robbery rates are falling more in Canada than in the United States. Following the release of these statistics, Matthew Cavedon, director of the Cato Institute’s Project on Criminal Justice, said:
“Less violent crime is good news for life, liberty, and property. But it is not evidence that militarized law enforcement and brutal immigration enforcement are working. These measures undermine the very trust in police that helps make America safer and may have even kept crime from falling further.”
