Following today’s decision striking down President Donald Trump’s executive order that challenged birthright citizenship, Dan Greenberg, a senior legal fellow in the Robert A. Levy Center for Constitutional Studies and a co-author of Cato’s amicus brief in this case, released a statement:
“The constitutional foundations of birthright citizenship have been locked in concrete for more than a century: the plain language of the Constitution, the public statements of the Reconstruction Amendments’ architects, and the on-point precedent made the outcome of Trump v. Barbara quite predictable. The Trump Administration’s challenge to birthright citizenship was a little surprising, but the Supreme Court’s finding – that the Constitution guarantees birthright citizenship – is not surprising at all.”
David Bier, the director of immigration studies at the Cato Institute, also released a statement:
“Today, the Supreme Court protected not only the citizenship rights of the children of immigrants, but the rights of all Americans. With government agents scouring the nation looking for people to remove, never has the birth certificate been a more important defense of our rights.”
