Cato Institute legal experts are available for interviews in light of President Trump’s recent comments that he will lead an effort to end mail-in voting.
Senior Fellow Walter Olson issued the following statement in reaction:
“Donald Trump has no constitutional authority to end mail voting by executive order, nor does he have the sort of authority over voting machine design that he pretends to have. The Framers of the U.S. Constitution took care to keep the main responsibility for administering elections with the states and localities, which are in no way mere ‘agents’ of federal authorities. All who support our republican constitution should aim to defend its design against usurpation by a would-be strongman.”
Cato Institute Adjunct Scholar Stephen Richer posted on X about the issue here.
