Please join us at the Cato Institute’s newly renovated, state-of-the-art F. A. Hayek Auditorium for a reception and screening of the award-winning feature film Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game followed by a Q&A session with the film’s directors, Austin and Meredith Bragg.

Pinball, a Moving Picture Institute original film, is “certified fresh” on the Rotten Tomatoes website. Top film critic Richard Brody of the New Yorker wrote, “It feels apt that ‘Pinball’ is coming out in the week following the woeful Oscars—it’s better than all ten of the Best Picture nominees, and 2023 will be a fine year in movies if there are five better lead performances than Faist’s or five better original screenplays.”

Pinball is based on the true story of Roger Sharpe, GQ journalist and pinball wizard, who in 1976 helped overturn New York City’s 35-year ban on pinball. In the film, pinball becomes a symbol for how the government imposes on people’s lives and happiness—through prohibitions and misguided regulations. The film stars Mike Faist (Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story), Crystal Reed (Swamp Thing and Teen Wolf), and Dennis Boutsikaris (Better Call Saul and The Bourne Legacy).

Please gather your friends and family to watch Pinball, which has been in over a dozen top film festivals and is getting rave reviews.

Pinball: The Man Who Saved the Game

An unsettled writer with a fantastic mustache, Roger Sharpe, finds solace and confidence in one thing he has mastered: pinball. When a police raid destroys the only machines he can find in 1970s New York City, he learns the game is illegal. Roger reluctantly joins forces with the Music and Amusement Association to overturn the ban while falling in love with Ellen, an artist and single mother. Roger’s path to save pinball ultimately rescues him. He and Ellen overcome their pasts and take a shot at love. Roger learns what it means to take a chance—and that commitment is the most rewarding gamble of all. Based on a true story.
