The Cato Institute seeks a Web Technologies Assistant to work with the web staff on the maintenance of and updates to the Institute's web sites. 'The duties involved in this entry-level position include posting content to our sites, web development projects using XHTML, CSS and JavaScript, database entry, graphics editing, and other tasks that may arise during the day-to-day management of multiple websites.
Candidates should have a solid understanding of XHTML and CSS. A working knowledge of javascript or a javascript framework, web standards and graphics manipulation software like Photoshop would be helpful. Excellent attention to detail, grammar, and proofing skills are required.

The Cato Institute is seeking an intern to assist with its photographic services and occasionally collaborate with the art department and marketing team on design projects. Responsibilities include attending Cato Book Forums, Lectures, Luncheons and Hill Briefings to digitally capture speakers, scholars and guests from a photojournalist's perspective. Candidate would require 20-25 hours/week availability; primarily between the hours of 10 am and 2 pm. Availability based on fall, winter, spring and summer terms is optimal. Extended time periods of the internship is a possibility.
Digital photographic equipment can be provided. However, personal digital equipment is preferred.
Candidate must have a working knowledge of SLR cameras and lenses. He/She must be familiar with basic photographic techniques (i.e., framing shots, white balance, detachable lenses and speedlites, manual shutter speed and aperture settings).
Candidate will also possess experience in layout and design. Candidate should have knowledge of design programs such as Adobe CS Suite and Quark Express. Ideal candidate is a student or recent graduate looking for entry-level experience in a design environment weighted in photographic assignments.

Use Your Deferment to Work for Liberty!
Many law firms are asking their incoming first-year associates to defer their start dates (from a few months to a full year) and are offering stipends to these deferred associates to work at public interest organizations.
The Cato Institute invites third-year law students and others facing firm deferrals to apply to work at our Center for Constitutional Studies. This is an opportunity to assist projects ranging from Supreme Court amicus briefs to policy papers to the Cato Supreme Court Review. The Cato Institute is seeking interns for the summer, fall and spring terms. Responsibilities include research assistance to Cato's policy directors, assisting at Cato events, some clerical chores, attendance at Cato events, and weekly seminars and readings. Candidates should be undergraduates, regardless of major, recent graduates, or graduate students who have a strong commitment to individual liberty, private property, free markets, peace, toleration, and limited government. The Cato Institute seeks papers and proposals on a wide range of policy issues. The Institute's publications include books, the Cato Journal, Regulation magazine, Cato Policy Report, and the Policy Analysis, Briefing Papers, Foreign Policy Briefings, and Social Security Choice series. A review of the documents at www.cato.org should give you an idea of the subjects that interest us and the style and tone appropriate for policy studies.
Manuscripts should be typed double-spaced, preferably in 12-pitch or pica, on 8 1/2 x 11 paper. Leave extra space around the title and byline. Margins on all four sides of the page should be at least 1 inch.
Notes should be done per the Chicago Manual of Style (Style A). They may be typed at the bottom of each page or preferably at the end of the manuscript. Notes should be double-spaced.
