It is [official](https://www.cato.org/pressroom.php?display=news&id=163) now — Nat Hentoff has joined the Cato Institute as a [senior fellow](https://www.cato.org/people/nat-hentoff).

I spoke with him on the phone a few days ago and said I was looking forward to working with him — to which he replied “we’ve *already* been working together for years on civil liberties issues.” True that. He said Cato was a natural fit for him because we both take [principled](https://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=6330) [positions](https://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=1130) in defense of the Constitution and liberty.

Nat Hentoff has authored many [books](http://www.amazon.com/Nat-Hentoff-Reader/dp/0306810840/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1233845451&sr=1-1) and hundreds of articles, but here’s a quick sampling of his writings: Criticizing President Bush’s attack on [habeas corpus](http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/hentoff071304.asp); defending Bush’s judicial nominee, [Janice Rogers Brown](http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/hentoff050505.asp); defending [free speech on campus](http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/hentoff101502.asp); criticizing the Clinton administration’s [handling](http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/hentoff042400.asp) of the [Elian Gonzales matter](http://www.jewishworldreview.com/cols/hentoff042903.asp).

Nat Hentoff wrote a regular column in the *Village Voice* for 50 years until last December. His farewell column at the *Voice* is [here](http://www.villagevoice.com/2009-01-07/columns/nat-hentoff-s-last-column-the-50-year-veteran-says-goodbye/). Good stuff. Cato will be stronger with Nat Hentoff’s passion for liberty and justice.
