Cato Scholars Named in Washingtonian’s Most Influential People in DC

Michael F. Cannon, Cato’s director of health policy studies, and David J. Bier, Cato’s director of immigration studies and the Selz Foundation Chair in Immigration Policy, were named to Washingtonian’s 2026 list of the 500 most influential people shaping policy in the nation’s capital. The magazine noted that Cannon has advanced market-based health care policy reforms and critiqued government intervention in the industry. Bier, meanwhile, was described as “the ‘math-driven’ conscience of the 2026 immigration debate,” with the Washingtonian citing his many appearances before Congress to testify on immigration policy.

Cato Defends Free Trade in the Courts

The Cato Institute and Ilya Somin, our B. Kenneth Simon Chair in Constitutional Studies, filed an amicus brief in April supporting two small businesses that challenged President Trump’s 10 percent tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974. The US Court of International Trade sided with those businesses in May, reinforcing constitutional limits on presidential tariff authority. The decision comes after the Supreme Court ruled against tariffs that Trump previously tried to impose under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA). Somin, along with the Liberty Justice Center, represented five businesses challenging the IEEPA tariffs.

Cato Poll Inspires High Schoolers to Perform 1776: The Musical

The High School for Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia will perform 1776: The Musical throughout the summer in honor of America’s 250th anniversary. Students at the school were reportedly motivated to put on the production by a recent Cato Institute poll that found 53 percent of Americans do not know why we celebrate the Fourth of July
