Wealth Inequality and Wealth Taxes

Live Online
Monday, April 15, 2019
4:00 – 4:30PM EDT

Featuring Chris Edwards, Director of Tax Policy Studies and Editor of DownsizingGovernment.org; moderated by Caleb O. Brown, host of the Cato Daily Podcast.

The 2020 presidential race has begun and numerous candidates are supporting higher taxes on the wealthy. Senator and presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren wants to impose an annual wealth tax on Americans of the kind that used to be common in Europe. Meanwhile, economist Thomas Piketty is claiming that rich people are idle “rentiers,” and many politicians and pundits are echoing that allegation.

In this Tax Day eBriefing, Chris Edwards will describe what the data on wealth inequality show, discuss the false caricatures in the media of wealthy Americans, and explain why most European countries have repealed their wealth taxes in recent decades.

This special online-only series is an opportunity to hear from Cato's policy staff. Please note that it is not necessary to download any software to watch the briefing online; no reservation is necessary. Please send any questions or comments ahead of time to respond to during the event in the question form below or send to Harrison Moar at hmoar@cato.org.
