President Bush has made the renewal of the Patriot Act, which is set to expire unless Congress renews it this year, a priority of his second term. Members of Congress are divided. The Senate Intelligence Committee recently voted to expand the Patriot Act by giving FBI agents the power to execute their own “administrative” subpoenas. But the House of Representatives just approved a measure that would scale the Patriot Act back by prohibiting the FBI from obtaining records from libraries and bookstores. Which provisions of the Patriot Act make sense? Which provisions go too far? Join us for a discussion of both the law and the politics of the Patriot Act.
