Every year the Cato Institute receives thousands of applications for its internship program and other student seminars. In fact, the number of well‐qualified candidates significantly surpasses the number of positions available. To engage the excess top quality talent, Cato has developed special, invitation‐only weekend seminars in conjunction with the Institute for Humane Studies, a forerunner in independent education opportunities for university students.
These seminars aim to identify, educate, and help launch the careers of aspiring liberty‐oriented policy minds. Each seminar will gather over 50 accomplished students to explore the historical, economic, and philosophical foundations of a free society and how these principles apply to contemporary policy issues. The seminars will include lectures with leading scholars and policy experts – many of whom students may recognize from nightly news shows, newspaper columns, and popular blogs. There will also be daily discussion groups and evening socials to provide an outlet for processing the ideas presented.
Policy issues this seminar will address: free trade, immigration, public choice, international development, economic freedom, the 2008 crisis, and more.
