Cannon](https://www.cato.org/people/michael-f-cannon) --- SHARE On Thursday, Cato will host a book forum for *[Medicare Meets Mephistopheles](http://www.catostore.org/index.asp?fa=ProductDetails&pid=1441322)*, a new book by Cato adjunct scholar [David Hyman](https://www.cato.org/people/hyman.html). *Medicare Meets Mephistopheles* takes a satirical look at the crown jewel of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society. ![Media Name: MMM_CoverLR.jpg](/sites/cato.org/files/styles/pubs_2x/public/download-remote-images/www.cato.org/138620933958/MMM_CoverLR.jpg?itok=WjIU3lgq) Hyman is a rising star in the field of health law and policy. A lawyer and a doctor, he is professor of law and medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In 2004, he was the lead author of [*Improving Health Care: A Dose of Competition*](http://www.ftc.gov/reports/healthcare/040723healthcarerpt.pdf), the first joint report by the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice. This year, he guest-edited an issue of the *[Journal of Health Policy, Politics and Law](http://jhppl.dukejournals.org/current.dtl)* devoted to that report. Prof. Hyman also has a habit of quoting [Austin Powers](http://events.clowningaround.com/images/Lookalike%20Photos/Austin%20Powers%20shagadelic.jpg) in his law review [articles](https://www.aslme.org/aslmesecure/shop/show_product.php?prod_id=447). [Ted Marmor](http://mba.yale.edu/faculty/profiles/marmor.shtml), one of Medicare’s leading advocates, will comment, as will [Robin Wilson](http://www.law.umaryland.edu/faculty_profile.asp?facultynum=280), a visiting professor of law at Washington & Lee University. The forum will be held at noon this Thursday at the Cato Institute, and will be followed by a luncheon.
