Project featuring José Piñera is president of the International Center for Pension Reform. As minister of labor and social security in Chile from 1978 to 1980, he privatized the government pension system. He later served as minister of mining. Piñera has been honored by the Pacific Research Institute, a San Francisco-based public policy organization for his achievements in the privatization of social security. In 1992 he ran for public office in one of the poorest communities in Chile, winning a large majority. He was an independent candidate for president of Chile in 1993, finishing third among six candidates. Piñera holds a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University. Click
