Peace & Freedom: Foreign Policy for a Constitutional Republic
New Book Offers Alternative to Interventionism
The United States must clarify its objectives in the war on terrorism, says the Cato Institute's vice president for defense and foreign policy studies, Ted Galen Carpenter, in a new book that offers a cogent analysis of U.S. foreign policy in the world's most dangerous regions.
In Peace & Freedom: Foreign Policy for a Constitutional Republic, Carpenter discusses a wide range of topics, including terrorism, the international drug war, our relations with NATO, the conflict in the Balkans, and U.S. policies in the Middle East. The essays in this collection explore ways in which the United States can protect its interests both at home and abroad without needlessly jeopardizing American lives. His analysis provides insight into the anti-American feelings in the Arab world so starkly evident since September 11, 2001. He argues that our intervention around the globe, often done with the best of intentions, frequently comes back to haunt us in myriad ways.
The incisive essays in this book provide a roadmap to where American foreign policy should be headed so that we can avoid those unintended consequences and enjoy a new era of peace and freedom.
