President Obama on February 17 signed the massive "stimulus package" that was passed by the House and Senate the previous week. In selling the bill to Congress, Obama argued that "economists from across the political spectrum agree" on the need for massive government spending to stimulate the economy. In fact, many economists disagree. Hundreds of them, including Nobel laureates and other prominent scholars, signed a statement that appeared in Cato's full-page ad in several national publications.
