Last year, thousands of people gathered in Johannesburg, South Africa, for the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development. The anniversary of the Summit's adjournment offers an opportunity to review both what happened in Johannesburg and what impact -- if any -- the conference has had on global affairs. In particular, are we any closer to understanding exactly what sustainable development is or even whether it is a useful concept for policymakers? Is the world on a more sustainable path today than it was a year ago? What, if anything, should governments do to encourage more sustainable development?
