Debunking Myths about the Media Ownership Debate

HILL BRIEFING
Friday, September 19, 2003
12:00 pm (Luncheon to follow)

This Event Has Been Cancelled.

Featuring Richard E. Wiley, Former General Counsel, Commissioner, and Chairman, Federal Communications Commission (1970–1977); James H. Quello, Former Commissioner and Chairman, Federal Communications Commission (1974–1997); and Harold Furchtgott-Roth, Former Commissioner, Federal Communications Commission (1997–2001).

B-369 Rayburn House Office Building

Three months after the Federal Communications Commission voted to slightly relax media ownership rules, the debate over media regulation continues to rage on Capitol Hill. Legislation that would gut much of the FCC’s proposed liberalization agenda has advanced in both the House and the Senate and new proposals are being made to reregulate the media sector in the name of “localism” and “diversity.”

But is the situation as bleak as critics claim? Is today’s media sector more or less competitive than it was in the past? Are current ownership rules helping or hindering the development of more competition and choice? Three former FCC commissioners will be on hand to discuss the current state of the modern media marketplace and answer questions about the regulations that govern this important sector.
