Global Warming: The Always-Imminent Threat

HILL BRIEFING
Friday, July 11, 2003
12:00 p.m.

Featuring Patrick J. Michaels, Cato Institute and University of Virginia, Author, The Satanic Gases: Clearing the Air about Global Warming.

B-340 Rayburn House Office Building

Dr. Patrick J. Michaels powerpoint presentation. (PPT, 85 Kb)

Despite the embarrassing disclosure that the climate models used in the recent "National Assessment" of global warming performed worse than a table of random numbers when applied to U.S. temperatures, the Senate has passed a resolution urging adoption of the Kyoto Treaty on the basis of that model. This faulty science also lies behind "climate change" amendments to the energy bill and related bills such as President Bush's "Clean Skies" initiative. Attempts to stop global warming legislatively will simply not work with currently acceptable or foreseeable technology. However, the incentive for scientists to exaggerate negative aspects of climate change remains strong given the current funding structure for scientific research. The path toward free-market environmentalism will be strewn with opposition from a powerful, entrenched set of interests. As the summer heats up, come hear Pat Michaels discuss the always-imminent threat of global warming.
