The President’s Commission to Strengthen Social Security recently reported its recommendations for reform of the nation’s troubled public pension system. What were the commission’s recommendations? How and why did the commission form its proposals? How does the commission’s work impact the efforts to reform Social Security by adding personal retirement accounts?

As a Cato Social Security analyst and a staff member of the commission, Andrew Biggs will provide details of the commission’s findings. Hans Reimer, a prominent critic of the commission, and Maya MacGuineas of the New America Foundation, who served as Social Security adviser to John McCain and who testified for the commission, will offer commentary.
