The Declaration of Independence
With the signing of the Declaration of Independence, representatives
of the Thirteen Colonies in North America announced the formal separation
of those colonies from Great Britain and the creation of the autonomous
United States of America. The text was drafted by Thomas Jefferson and
revised by Franklin, Adams, and Jefferson, before it was put before the
Second Continental Congress of Philadelphia, where it was changed again.
The final draft was adopted on July 4, 1776.
