Henry Louis Mencken (1880–1956) was a leading defender of liberty in 20th-century America. He challenged restrictions on freedom of the press, denounced President Woodrow Wilson for entering World War I, and criticized Franklin Delano Roosevelt's lust for political power. Terry Teachout, music critic for Commentary and a contributor to Time, has written a biography of Mencken that explores his contributions to liberty without ignoring his blemishes. Teachout will be joined by columnist P. J. O'Rourke, H. L. Mencken research fellow at the Cato Institute, to discuss this important new book.
