Will the war on terrorism revive big government? H. W. Brands’ new book argues that Americans are skeptical of an expansive federal government. Big government needed war, especially the Cold War, to grow. After the Cold War, big government lost much of its legitimacy and the trust of most Americans. September 11 started America’s new war. Will limited government be the next victim of the battle against terror?
